The mine is still active, but at a much lower level and no more fluorescent materials are being found, so this material can only be obtained from old stocks/collections.
The first written evidence of mining in Garpenberg dates back to the 14th century. Mining probably began much earlier. The place name comes from the miners, “Garpar” from Germany, who were hired to develop mining and manage the huts in the area.
In 1962, a new ore deposit was found north of the old mine, expanding the mining area. The new mine is called Garpenberg Norra and its tunnels are now connected to the older, southern mine.
Garpenberg is the only mine in Bergslagen that is still in operation. Copper, lead, zinc, silver, and gold are extracted from the ore. Boliden AB is the company responsible for the mining activities.
