友成触旭图 - 日本全景鸟瞰地图 - 纸 - 日本 - Edo Period (1600-1868)

Item Description This is a rare Edo period woodblock print map titled "Tomonari Shokyoku-zu" (友鳴松旭圖), published by Mikawaya Tetsugoro in Nihonbashi Motoyamacho, Edo. This remarkable piece represents a bird's-eye view map of the Japanese archipelago, showcasing the entire nation from a unique perspective that was popular during the late Edo period. The map depicts Japan's major islands, travel routes, and notable landmarks with intricate detail characteristic of Edo cartography. The woodblock printing technique demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship achieved during this era, with fine lines and careful composition creating a comprehensive view of Japan as it was understood in the late Edo period. Published in both Naniwa (Osaka) and Edo (Tokyo), this map served as both a practical travel guide and a decorative artwork for the educated merchant class. The panoramic format, stretching 178cm in width, was designed to capture the entirety of Japan's geography in a single, continuous view. The map shows signs of its age with visible fold lines, which are testament to its historical use and authenticity. Despite being over 150 years old, the print retains remarkable clarity in its details, allowing viewers to appreciate the geographical knowledge and artistic sensibilities of Edo period Japan. This piece is an excellent example of commercial cartography from the late Edo period and would be a significant addition to any collection of Japanese maps, woodblock prints, or historical documents. Size Height: 41.5 cm Width: 178 cm Weight 28 g Condition The map shows age-appropriate wear with visible fold lines throughout.
