Item Description
This listing is for one Japanese creative kokeshi doll titled “Dream of Spring.” The doll was created by Tanaka Kojo, an award-winning kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture, known for his distinctive and slightly unconventional portrayal of young girls.
The figure has a tall and elegant form, with a softly rounded head and a gently tapered body. The facial expression is calm and introspective, characterized by closed, elongated eyes and minimal features, giving the doll a quiet, poetic presence. This subtle expression is a hallmark of Tanaka Kojo’s work and sets his pieces apart from more traditional styles.
The body is decorated with delicately painted plum blossom motifs in red and white, symbolizing early spring. The branches are drawn with fine, flowing lines, creating a sense of movement and seasonal atmosphere that corresponds well with the title “Dream of Spring.” The natural wood tone of the body enhances the softness of the design and highlights the hand-painted details.
The hairstyle is carved in a distinctive rounded form, with a double-bun knot at the top, finished in a dark, vertically grained stain that contrasts beautifully with the lighter body. The interior carving around the face adds depth and a sculptural quality to the overall form.
The base is signed with the artist’s name, confirming authenticity. The doll shows light surface wear and minor marks consistent with age and handling, but no major cracks or repairs are observed. Overall condition is good for a vintage creative kokeshi.

Tanaka Kojo

He is an award-winning artist at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest and gained popularity for his unique depiction of girls’ faces, which differ subtly from mainstream kokeshi styles. His works are valued for their individuality and quiet emotional expression. Today, his legacy continues through his son, Tanaka Shigemi (known as “Kokeshi-ge”), who operates the workshop under the name Kojo Kokeshi Studio.
