Description
[Short Description & Origin] A remarkable and diverse collection of vintage Ainu folk art (Mingei) from Hokkaido, Japan. This set features high-quality wood carvings and textiles primarily crafted in the mid-1960-1970s (Showa period).
The collection includes:
Nipopo Dolls: Hand-carved wooden figures representing "wooden children," traditional amulets for good luck.
Onko Woodcrafts: Several items are made from Onko (Japanese Yew), a sacred and premium wood in Ainu culture known for its beautiful grain and deep reddish-brown patina that improves with age.
Writing Instruments: A rare wooden fountain pen and ballpoint pen set, featuring intricate carvings. The original display cards bear handwritten dates from 1971, providing excellent provenance.
Ainu Pattern Textile: A beautiful book cover featuring traditional "Attush" style geometric embroidery, designed to ward off evil spirits.
Utility Art: Includes a hand-carved tea scoop (Chasaji) by the renowned Daisetsu Soki-sha workshop, letter openers with bear/Ainu motifs, and a commemorative bottle opener.
These pieces represent a period when Ainu craftsmanship reached a peak in artistry for the domestic travel market. All items have been carefully preserved in a private collection for over 50 years.
