Rare pair of figural Art Deco bookends depicting two seals or sealions.
France 1930’s.
Silverplated spelter mounted on marble bases.
Signed 'Frecourt. The signature refers to the French sculptor Maurice Frecourt (1890-1961). Frecourt was an active artist during the Art Deco period (roughly 1920–1940). He exhibited at prestigious venues like the Salon des Artistes in Paris. He is well-known for his stylish, abstracted animal figures, frequently realized as bookends or sculptures. His work is a quintessential example of Art Deco animal sculpture (Animalier). Other popular subjects of his include panthers, squirrels, and herons.
The bookends depict two seals standing upright and facing each other. This is a charming and dynamic motif that perfectly aligns with the Art Deco preference for streamlined, lively animal figures. The sculptures are sleek and stylized, featuring the typical geometric yet flowing lines of the Art Deco era. The pose is symmetrical and balanced, making them ideal for bookends.
The silverplated spelter sculptures are mounted on octagonal or polygonal bases made of marble. The marble is characteristic green marble with white/black veining (Vert de Mer or a similar type). This type of marble was a standard feature in French Art Deco sculptures.
