Immerse yourself in the legacy of Miki Hyoetsu II, a maestro of lacquer craft, with this Showa era geometric lacquer miniature chest. The three-tiered chest reveals a vermillion lacquer base with a prominent gold rhombus at the center, divided into nine smaller diamond sections. Each harbors motifs of pine needles, bamboo leaves, and plum blossoms, intermittently highlighted with mother-of-pearl accents.
The pine, bamboo, and plum are cherished symbols of good fortune and resilience. The chest itself boasts a black lacquer exterior with geometric patterns in gold and beige that cascade down its sides in elegant stripes, a nod to the colored lacquer technique.
Miki Hyoetsu II was not only the head of the Miki family but also a celebrated lacquer artist, known for his contributions to the kyoto-nuri style within the Omote school. He was honored with numerous awards, including the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Merit Award, and made significant strides in lacquer artistry, evidenced by his grand prize at the Paris World Exposition.
This piece comes with a hand-inscribed signature at the back, certifying its authenticity and lineage. While it shows some signs of wear, it remains a stunning example of Japanese craft, ready to grace any collection with its historical and artistic significance.
