RADO Balboa V – Sculptural Faceted Crystal from Rado’s Experimental Design Era This RADO Balboa V is a vintage model from the late 1960s to early 1970s, a period when Rado was actively exploring experimental case architecture and crystal design that departed from conventional wristwatch forms. Rather than pursuing traditional elegance, Rado used this era to test bold shapes, innovative materials, and visual impact—an approach clearly embodied in the Balboa V. The defining feature of this model is its faceted sapphire crystal, cut with multiple planes that dramatically change its appearance depending on the viewing angle. Light refracts sharply across the crystal and case, giving the watch a sculptural presence that feels far more substantial than its dimensions suggest. The case is constructed from Rado’s signature hard metal (tungsten-based material), developed for exceptional scratch resistance. This choice of material highlights Rado’s early commitment to durability-focused innovation, a direction that would later define the brand’s global reputation. The dial features a dark gradient finish, applied hour markers, and a date display at 3 o’clock. The date can be adjusted by pulling the crown to the first position, allowing for practical daily operation despite the watch’s strong design emphasis. An original Rado anchor logo crown is fitted. The anchor logo is also visible on the dial; however, its rotation has not been tested and therefore cannot be guaranteed. The caseback bears the characteristic “Rado Water-Sealed” engraving, a hallmark of Rado watches from this period. This marking reflects the brand’s design and construction philosophy of the era and does not indicate modern water resistance standards. The case width measures approximately 36.0 mm. A new leather strap is installed, making the watch ready to wear upon arrival. A very faint hairline crack can be observed on the crystal around the 10 to 11 o’clock area. As shown in the photos, this is minor and does not significantly affect the overall appearance when worn, but is disclosed for full transparency as a vintage timepiece. The watch is running at the time of listing. As a vintage watch, stable operation, accuracy, and water resistance are not guaranteed.
