掛軸(kakejiku)上有一幅山名八之進的肖像。 - 巨盘木 - 日本

A hanging scroll painting 掛け軸 (kakejiku) depicting a portrait of Yamana Hachinoshin 山名八之進, attributed to Hanabusa Itchô 英一蝶 (1652–1724). The painting finely portrays Yamana Hachinoshin painted to celebrate his Genpuku (coming-of-age ceremony) on his 15th birthday, with the upper register detailing the genealogy of the Yamana family. Painted in ink and watercolours on silk, mounted as a hanging scroll within a silk brocade frame fitted with dark brown wooden jikusaki (roller ends). Inscriptions: Signed “This is hereby painted and inscribed by Itchô Fujifusa Gan Yuensai” 巖有淵斎、一蝶藤房、奉謹書冩 (Gan Yuensai (Uensai), Itchô Fuji Fusa, tsutsushinde tatematsuri kaki utsusu) with seal “Yuensai (Uensai)” 有淵斎. Further inscriptions identify the subject: “This is a portrait painting of Yamana Hachinoshin to celebrate his 15th birthday, who played as a young child with Akiyama Gyokuzan Giemon (1702–1764), a son of a retainer at the Kumamoto Domain in Higo Province, Kyushu. Akiyama later became a scholar of Chinese classics…” Period: Japan – 18th century (Edo period) Dimensions: Image 110.5 × 33 cm; Total (including mounting) 188 × 45 cm. In very good condition, with minor wear, slight soiling, and a few stains. The mounting shows the usual traces of age and use. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. Complete with a wooden tomobako 共箱 (storage box) placed in a orange cardbord container. Hanabusa Itchô 英一蝶 (1652–1724) was a prominent Japanese painter, calligrapher, and haiku poet. Trained in the Kanô school under Kanô Yasunobu, he later rejected that formal style to pursue an individual, bunjin (literati) expression. Known also as Hishikawa Wao and by several other names, Itchô became celebrated for his innovative, humanistic approach that bridged courtly and popular art in early Edo Japan. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
