Two Ophthalmoscopes: A Keeler AR‑2920 ophthalmoscope set with a dry‑cell battery handle, used for examining the inside of the eye, dating to around 1950–1960. The instrument is a hand‑held electric ophthalmoscope: the AR‑2920 head carries a viewing aperture and rotating lens disc so the clinician can focus on the retina, optic disc and blood vessels. The long cream‑coloured handle holds a dry‑cell battery (your separate brass tube) which powers a small bulb in the head; in a darkened room, the examiner holds it close to the patient’s pupil and adjusts the lenses while viewing the fundus. Keeler (London) has produced diagnostic instruments since the early 20th century.
An electric ophthalmoscope used for the same purpose. In this example the cylindrical handle houses the power connection; the long twin cable with two metal prongs plugs into a separate battery box or wall transformer, which then powers the lamp in the head.
The black crackle‑finish or textured handle and black enamelled head with a rotary lens dial are typical of post‑war electric ophthalmoscopes. It also has an insulated twin cable with simple 2‑pin plugs, the date of manufacture is likely a little earlier than the Keeler example.
Both are in good visual condition in their original cases and offered as collectibles and/or display items, both are untested.
