FULL SAMURAI ARMOR GUSOKU
Edo Period
With its original red-lacquer armor box
HISTORICAL AND CONTEXTUAL NARRATIVE
This impressive Edo-period yoroi immediately stands out through its striking golden crescent moon maedate, a symbol of vigilance, power, and spiritual clarity. Its tall, sweeping silhouette identifies it as a set intended for a samurai of notable rank, suitable for both battlefield presence and ceremonial display.
The defining heraldic feature of this armor is the Go-san no Kiri (五三桐) mon —the legendary paulownia crest historically associated with the Toyotomi clan, especially Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Featuring three stylized floral clusters, this emblem was traditionally reserved for families of great prestige and later became one of the most recognizable symbols of authority in Japan. Its appearance on the dō and sode signals a connection to high status and elite lineage.
The ensemble follows a refined aesthetic: deep black lacquer, light-colored cords, multicolored Edo brocades, and traditionally constructed metal elements.
