1775 Dutch Republic (United Provinces of the Netherlands) Dutch East India Company 2 Stuiver silver coin
Hightlights:
1. A reliable witness to Dutch trade history, and collectible value more inclined toward cultural rather than economic aspects, holds cultural significance as a tangible link to 18th-century European colonialism and Dutch maritime history.
2. Graded NGC MS61, most circulation coins have undergone centuries of use, and well-preserved high-grade examples are fewer.
Coin Story:
The 1939 Netherlands Kingdom Wilhelmina 1 Gulden is a standard circulating silver coin issued under Queen Wilhelmina (reign 1890-1948), part of the 1922-1945 series. This coin was minted on the eve of World War II, just before the Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany in 1940, making it one of the last batches of domestically produced circulating coins before the war. It symbolizes the Dutch monarchy and national independence. The obverse features Queen Wilhelmina's left-facing portrait with the inscription "WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN" (Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands), conveying royal authority; the reverse shows a crowned small shield emblem with the inscription "MUNT VAN HET KONINGRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN" (Coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands), and the edge inscription "GOD * ZIJ * MET * ONS *" (God be with us), reflecting Dutch religious and national traditions.
This coin was not only used for daily transactions but also became a symbol of Dutch resistance after the war, with Queen Wilhelmina herself becoming an emblem of national unity during her exile in Britain. Post-war, some similar coins were produced at the U.S. Philadelphia Mint, but the 1939 edition was produced by the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht, representing the transitional period in the Dutch monetary system from decimalization in 1817 until the euro's introduction in 2001.
