Pair of Chinese Bowls, Late Qing Dynasty
A fine pair of late Qing dynasty Chinese porcelain bowls decorated in underglaze blue. The exterior is beautifully decorated with the traditional “Four Gentlemen” motifs: Peony (牡丹), Lotus (莲/荷), Prunus (梅), and Chrysanthemum (菊), framed by a band of bats at the upper rim and lappets at the foot. The interior features a central Double Happiness symbol (囍), encircled by five bats at the rim and an additional bat motif around the edge. The five bats represent the Five Blessings (五福): longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful death.
The combination of floral and auspicious symbols conveys wishes for prosperity, virtue, longevity, and marital bliss, making these bowls both decorative and highly symbolic.
Marked on the underside with 若深珍臟 (Ruo shen zhen cang)
