Artist Profile
Kato Takuo (1917-2005) was the sixth-generation master of Koubei Kiln, one of Japan's most prestigious ceramic workshops with a history spanning over 200 years. Designated as a Living National Treasure in 1995 for his mastery of sancai (three-color) glazing techniques, Kato devoted his life to researching and reviving ancient ceramic traditions.
His journey into ceramic archaeology began in 1961 when he studied in Finland and encountered ancient Persian pottery. Captivated by its beauty, Kato spent over 25 years researching and successfully recreating luster ware, a technique that had been lost since the 17th century. His work with Persian ceramics earned him international recognition and established him as a pioneer in the revival of ancient glazing methods.
In 1980, the Imperial Household Agency commissioned Kato to recreate Shosoin sancai ceramics, which he accomplished with remarkable success. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades including the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the title of Honorary Citizen of Gifu Prefecture. His legacy continues through his son, the seventh-generation master of Koubei Kiln, ensuring that his artistic innovations and techniques are preserved for future generations.
