After Sakai Hoitsu Wisteria & Birds Scroll - 真丝 - Sakai Hoitsu - 日本 - 20世纪
This is a refined Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting wisteria blossoms and small birds, executed in color on silk. The work is an attributed piece after Sakai Hōitsu, one of the great masters of the Rinpa school, whose style was highly influential from the late Edo period onward.
The composition emphasizes elegant rhythm and decorative balance, with cascading wisteria flowers and delicately rendered birds. The refined brushwork, soft mineral pigments, and graceful spacing reflect the distinctive aesthetics of the Rinpa tradition, which values lyrical beauty, nature motifs, and harmonious design.
Based on style and materials, the scroll is considered to date from the Meiji to Taishō period, when many skilled painters studied and revived classical Rinpa models. The silk ground enhances the delicacy of the colors and lines, giving the work an airy and refined presence.
The scroll comes with a tomobako bearing an appraisal inscription (shikibako), adding to its collectability and scholarly interest.
A fine piece for collectors of Rinpa-style painting, Japanese hanging scrolls, and nature-themed Nihonga.
