A striking Shônai wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in two sections. Fully restored, cleaned, and waxed in Japan. Made of thick, solid Zelkova 欅 (keyaki) wood with an attractive swirling grain. Finished with a shunkei-style reddish-brown lacquer that retains a glossy finish while revealing the natural wood grain. The upper section features two full-width drawers, and the lower section comprises two drawers of varying size and a hinged door opening to two additional small drawers. It is clad with sturdy hand-forged iron fittings. The drawers are fitted with sturdy rectangular kakute 角手 bail handles, paired with large decorative lock plates adorned with a raised chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku)-shaped knob. Spacious and versatile, the cabinet offers practical storage thanks to its variety of compartments. Each side is fitted with pole-carrying handles for ease of transport, and locking the upper part into place. These types of cabinets originate from the Shônai region in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
