Wajima lacquerware is made in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its distinctive feature is the use of Wajima jinko, a type of clay found only in Wajima City.
The jinko clay found in Wajima is of high quality, and its use as a base coat makes it possible to create lacquerware with even greater strength. Another appealing feature of Wajima lacquerware is its beautiful appearance.
Wajima lacquerware is well known for its use of gold inlays in carved areas and the use of gold and silver powder in a technique known as maki-e. The elegant appearance of the gold and silver powder is captivating. Wajima lacquerware also excels in terms of its longevity. Wajima lacquerware is only released to the public after undergoing over 100 processes. This not only makes it stronger, but it can also be repaired if damaged.
