The golden floral patterns on the comb and kōgai are created using the Shōgan (象嵌) technique—gold wires or gold flakes are inlaid into pre-carved grooves on the base and secured firmly, lending the patterns distinct dimensionality. The white floral motifs on the comb are decorated with Shippō (七宝烧) enamel, which is produced by firing enamel on a metal base prior to being inlaid onto the comb surface; the colors are lustrous and smooth to the touch. The main body of the set is made of celluloid, combined with metal and enamel fittings, balancing aesthetic appeal with practical durability. The overall design features classic Japanese floral patterns, with coordinated motifs on the comb and kōgai, exuding an elegant and refined charm. As high-end hair ornaments favored by the samurai class and middle-class women of that era, these Shōgan Shippō Kushi-Kōgai embody the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Japanese artistry, serving as a symbol of the wearer’s taste and social status, and standing as a quintessential example of traditional Japanese crafts.
This set of Kushi-Kōgai (栉笄) comes with the base of its original box, but the lid is missing. The base shows signs of aging such as damage and mold spots.
The Kushi-Kōgai themselves have traces of oxidation and wear, yet are free from cracks or structural damage. Overall condition is good.
