Frederick Carlton (Carl) Lewis (Birmingham (Alabama), July 1, 1961) is a former American track and field athlete who won ten Olympic medals, including nine gold medals, and ten medals at the World Championships in Athletics, including eight gold medals, during his career. Lewis' eventful career lasted from 1979 to 1996, when he won his ninth Olympic title. Lewis was a sprinter and long jumper who was regularly ranked number one in the world in the 100m and 200m sprints and long jump from 1980 to the early 1990s.
