Description:
A beautiful “Yūsai” (glaze-decorated) flower vase crafted by Heian Tachikichi (平安橘吉), accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
The vase features a graceful spherical body with a gently flared mouth, showcasing a breathtaking glaze blend of deep indigo, turquoise, pale blue, and soft yellow tones. The smooth transition of colors creates a tranquil, watery impression, while the lustrous finish enhances the subtle crackling pattern beneath the glaze. This refined harmony of color and texture exemplifies the signature aesthetic of Kyoto pottery.
About Heian Tachikichi (平安橘吉):
Heian Tachikichi is a long-established Kyoto-based pottery workshop celebrated for its exquisite Kyō-yaki (Kyoto ware). The workshop has been active for generations, preserving traditional Japanese ceramic techniques while continually exploring new glaze expressions. Known for its refined sense of color and elegant form, the name “Heian Tachikichi” represents both craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity deeply rooted in Kyoto’s cultural heritage.
About Yūsai (Glaze Decoration):
“Yūsai” (釉彩) literally means “colored glaze.” It is a technique involving the application of multiple colored glazes that melt and blend during firing, producing complex gradations and natural, fluid color transitions. Each firing yields a unique finish — no two pieces ever look exactly the same.
Estimated Production Period:
Likely created during the late Shōwa to early Heisei period (circa 1980s–1990s), when the Tachikichi workshop was especially active in producing modern interpretations of traditional Kyoto glaze art.
Expert’s Insight:
This piece embodies the quintessential elegance of Kyoto ceramics — refined yet expressive. The controlled form allows the vivid glaze to shine, while the seamless color flow gives the vase a quiet yet captivating energy. A fine example of Heian Tachikichi’s sophisticated glaze work and Kyoto’s enduring ceramic artistry.
