“Romantic Feelings,” Pair of Creative Kokeshi Dolls with Red and White Plum Blossoms by Okamoto Usaburo Item Description This lot consists of two Japanese creative kokeshi dolls, both titled “Koigokoro.” The title “Koigokoro” can be translated as “Romantic Feelings.” They are crafted in dark brown wood and decorated with sculptural red and white plum blossoms carved and applied in relief, creating a strong sense of depth and texture. The surface combines smooth turned areas with carved patterns, enhancing the natural wood grain. The plum motif is delicately expressed, symbolizing gentle affection and emotional warmth. Both dolls bear the artist’s seal on the base. One doll is larger and more elongated, while the other is smaller, forming a harmonious and visually balanced pair. Minor signs of age and handling are present, consistent with the material and period, but the overall condition is well preserved. Artist: Okamoto Usaburo (First Generation Usaburo) Founder of the Usaburo Kokeshi Workshop and a recipient of the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award. He is also known for works purchased by the Showa Emperor. His innovations in carved and three-dimensional decorative techniques established the foundation of modern creative kokeshi production.
