The title “Shinkan” can be translated as “Forest Serenity.” They are characterized by their cylindrical form and the rich, flowing grain of the wood, which has been intentionally preserved and emphasized rather than painted. The surfaces reveal natural variations in tone and pattern, creating an organic and calming visual effect. Each doll is accented with a simple decorative cord around the body, adding a subtle handcrafted detail. The facial expressions are minimal and serene, contributing to the tranquil atmosphere suggested by the title. Both pieces were originally sold as souvenirs from Muikamachi Onsen in Niigata Prefecture and bear the artist’s seal on the base.
