This is a superb specimen of the striking “bug-eyed” phacopid trilobite Coltraneia oufatenensis—a species sometimes informally labeled Treveropyge. Its most remarkable feature is the pair of towering compound eyes, each densely packed with dozens of individual holochroal lenses. These highly developed visual organs would have granted the animal an exceptionally wide field of view, enabling it to simultaneously monitor both approaching predators and potential prey—an evolutionary edge during the Early Devonian, when jawed fish were just beginning to emerge as dominant marine hunters. Notably, this period also coincides with a broader trend among trilobites toward enhanced defensive adaptations, such as reinforced exoskeletons and elaborate spines. Measuring 3 cm in length, this fossil displays excellent surface detail throughout, and it has been left entirely unrestored—a rare and desirable trait for collectors and researchers alike.
