Polished brass statue “rock on” hand sign
The piece is part of a NOIR Furniture series that features the most iconic hand symbols often used by people all over the globe.
The "rock on" hand sign often means "rock on," "heavy metal," or "party time" these days, but its roots are older. Originating as a protective gesture against the "evil eye" (malocchio) in Mediterranean cultures, the gesture was popularized in rock by Ronnie James Dio who learned it from his Italian grandmother. It also appears in Buddhism for expelling demons and bringing strength, showing its diverse meanings of power, protection, and rebellion across cultures.
For football fans the gesture might also be known as the "Hook 'em Horns". Used by University of Texas fans, to symbolize support for the Texas Longhorns by mimicking the shape of a longhorn steer's head. Created in 1955 by UT student H.K. Pittz and popularized by yell leader Harley Clark, it signifies school pride and unity, with rivals often using the inverted "Horns Down" sign to mock it.
