It is a mukashi-utsushi work, meaning a faithful reproduction of a classic, historical design. Such works were created to preserve and honour the aesthetic ideals of historic tea ceremony culture. The deep black lacquer ground is richly decorated with gold maki-e depicting an autumn field scene. The composition features chrysanthemums, bush clover, and pampas grass, arranged with flowing lines that evoke the quiet beauty of the season. In Japanese art and tea culture, chrysanthemums symbolise longevity, dignity, and renewal, and are closely associated with refined autumn elegance. Bush clover represents humility, gentle resilience, and the fleeting nature of beauty, often celebrated in classical poetry. Pampas grass symbolises autumn itself and the passage of time, expressing calm reflection and impermanence. Together, these motifs create a poetic and contemplative autumn atmosphere well suited to the tea ceremony. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The artist Yūsai employs various gold powder techniques to create depth, texture, and subtle movement across the surface.
