The scabbard is entirely inlaid with fine pieces of mother-of-pearl (raden), creating a lustrous surface that catches the light beautifully. There are two visible cracks, along with small chips, scuffs, and areas of dullness on the lacquer, as well as some discolouration to the copper fittings. The circular iron tsuba (sword guard), weighing 81 g, features an openwork design with sekigane copper inserts in the tang opening. Adjustment marks can be seen around the opening, along with patches of rust and green patina from age. The handle is wrapped with black cord over rayskin, which shows a split on one side. It has a pair of brass menuki in high relief, depicting the character “Kotobuki 壽” (longevity) and leaf motifs, both with aged patina. The fuchi (collar) is made of blackened copper with a finely hammered nanako ground and is detachable. This delicate technique is achieved by striking the surface with a rounded chisel to create minute granules resembling fish roe. While some artisans used tools that produced several dots at once, master craftsmen achieved the most refined results by hand, dot by dot. Such skill was highly specialised and rare even in the Edo period. The copper habaki and the two brass seppa show signs of wear and age-related discolouration. Overall, the set remains in fair to good antique condition. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions of Tsuba: approx. H 7 cm W 7 cm D 0.5 cm Total length of scabbard (not included Tsuka Handle): 54.8 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
