化石头骨放在底座上 - 头骨化石 - Dinocrocuta gigantea - 46.5 cm - 40.5 cm

Dinocrocuta gigantea — The Miocene Bone-Crusher Dinocrocuta was an exceptionally large member of the hyena family, functioning as an apex scavenger and predator on the open plains of the Late Miocene. It was larger than a modern African lion and possessed an extremely robust skull and lower jaw, with massive teeth and thick enamel. The temporal and sagittal crests were strongly developed, indicating an extraordinarily powerful bite force. As a result, it is regarded as a hypercarnivorous bone-crusher of its time. This specimen represents a robust adult individual with a massive, thick-built skull. One of its most striking features is the presence of all four canines, fully preserved and displaying a distinctive blue-green mineral staining, giving the specimen an exceptionally powerful and imposing appearance when displayed. The left side of the skull shows partial loss, likely the result of scavenging or biting trauma during life, or post-mortem damage and decay prior to burial. Rather than detracting from its appeal, this damage adds a sense of history and narrative to the specimen, making it a highly compelling and collectible fossil skull. Sincerely recommended to collectors seeking an authentic and character-rich example of this remarkable Miocene predator.
