The process of Emperor Zhenzong's ascension to the throne was complicated. After taking the throne, he personally led military campaigns and exchanged money for peace, establishing the Chanyuan Treaty. This marked the beginning of using annual tributes to maintain peace between the Song and Liao dynasties, which also opened up trade between the two. During his reign, the production of iron tools improved, arable land increased significantly, various agricultural and industrial trades flourished, and porcelain prospered. Taxes were not excessively harsh, allowing the people to gradually become more prosperous; this period is historically known as the Reign of Xianping. In his later years, Emperor Zhenzong followed Taoism and Buddhism, claiming to receive divine dreams granting him sacred texts, conducting grand sacrificial ceremonies, and many folk stories arose around him, which remain highly controversial.
