Art Deco “Floraliès” Vase by Doyen
Belgium, ca. 1930s
A refined example of Belgian Art Deco glasswork, this medium-sized amethyst glass vase was produced in the 1930s by the Doyen glassworks in Havré-Ville (Mons), Belgium. It belongs to the celebrated “Floraliès” series and corresponds to model No. 301, which appears both in the historical Doyen production catalogue and in the reference book Verre et Noir by É. & L. Lagnard.
This elegant vase, standing 17.5 cm tall, is hand-blown in deeply colored amethyst glass. Its piriform (pear-shaped) body is accentuated by tiered horizontal ribs and a flared neck finished with a delicately crimped rim—an instantly recognizable Doyen feature.
Fully handmade, the vase carries the charm of artisanal production with subtle variations and natural imperfections.
Its proportions are ideal for a small spring bouquet—especially tulips—making it both a beautiful display object and a functional decorative piece. A versatile collector’s item, it will complement both Art Deco interiors and more minimalist contemporary settings with equal grace.
In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era.
Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors.
Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
