A compelling Viking Age bronze amulet depicting a stylised wolf’s head, an animal of profound symbolic importance in Norse belief. The wolf was closely associated with strength, protection, and the warrior spirit, as well as with the mythological traditions surrounding Odin and the fierce, untamed forces of nature.
This amulet displays a compact, three-dimensional form with clearly modelled facial features and a suspension loop, indicating it was intended to be worn as a personal talisman. Such objects were believed to provide apotropaic protection, warding off danger while invoking the power and vigilance of the wolf.
The surface shows an attractive, undisturbed patina consistent with long burial, confirming its considerable age. The restrained yet expressive style reflects pre-Viking and early Viking artistic traditions, preceding the fully developed animal art styles of the later Viking Age.
Comparable amulets are known from Scandinavian and North Sea cultural contexts, where personal animal charms played an important role in spiritual and daily life.
A rare and evocative piece, ideal for collectors of Viking Age artifacts, Norse mythology, or early medieval amulets.
Condition: Intact, with wear and patina consistent with age
