DESCRIPTION:
Heracles:
Heracles is the most famous hero in Greek mythology and perhaps also in classical antiquity. His name derives from the goddess Hera and the Greek word “kleos” (glory), meaning “glory of Hera”. He was considered the son of Zeus and Alcmene, a mortal queen, the adopted son of Amphitryon and the great-grandson of Perseus on his mother's side. At birth, he was given the name Alcaeus or Alcides, in honour of his grandfather, although this same word evokes the idea of strength. It was in adulthood that he received the name by which he is known, imposed by Apollo, through the Pythia, to indicate his status as a servant of the goddess Hera. In ancient Rome, as in Western Europe, he is better known as Hercules, and some Roman emperors, including Commodus and Maximian, identified with him.
His extraordinary strength is his main attribute, but so are his courage, pride, a certain candour and formidable sexual vigour. He is considered the ancestor of the kings of Sparta, which was one of the reasons for the spread of his legend and cult, making Heracles the Dorian hero par excellence. There are many mythological stories about him, the most famous being the twelve labours. The stories in which he is the protagonist form a cycle that developed constantly throughout Antiquity, which is why it is difficult to give a chronological or even coherent account of them.
