獏的寺庙木鼻(kibana) - 木, Keyaki 欅(zelkova – “日本榉树”), 玻璃 - 日本 - 幕末时期(1853–1867年)

A striking carved wooden temple ornament 木鼻 (kibana) in the shape of a mythical baku 獏 (also written 貘), the supernatural creature said to devour nightmares. With a fierce expression, piercing eyes beneath heavy brows and swirling manes. The baku is portrayed here with its mouth open in a powerful stance. In Buddhist symbolism, the open mouth forms the sound “a” あ, representing beginnings. Traditionally placed at the ends of beams or atop columns, kibana serve as protective architectural elements in temples. This example is carved from solid keyaki 欅 (zelkova – Japanese elm) and fitted with reverse-painted glass eyes: black pupils rimmed in gold. The baku is said to have the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the tail of a cow, the eyes of a rhinoceros, and the claws of a tiger. According to legend, calling on a baku after a nightmare will cause it to devour the bad dream; allowing the dreamer to sleep peacefully. But the summoning must be done with caution: if still hungry, the baku may consume one's hopes and desires as well. Period: Japan – Bakumatsu period (1853–1867) Dimensions: Height 38 cm; Length 65.5 cm; Depth 18 cm In good condition considering its age, with signs of wear consistent with age, including some insect damage and restorations, most notably to the right tusk. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
