SOME GENERAL INFORMATIONS: Tapio Wirkkala designed a significant part of his work for Iittala, creating nearly four hundred objects during the forty years he collaborated with the company. One of his most renowned designs, Ultima Thule, was inspired by the melting ice in Lapland and was originally developed in the 1960s through hand-carved modeling. The exclusive design reflects the thousands of hours it took to perfect the glassblowing technique required to achieve this distinctive effect. Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was a master of glass design. He had a deep connection with nature, and his works beautifully capture the essence of the Finnish landscape in glass. He was particularly inspired by the melting ice of Lapland — a theme most clearly reflected in his iconic Ultima Thule collection. In addition to glass design, his work encompassed sculpture, graphic design, and even the design of banknotes. During his active career, Tapio Wirkkala participated in international exhibitions and served for several years as the artistic director at the University of Art and Design. He received numerous awards, including three gold medals at the Milan Triennial in 1951 and 1954. Ultima Thule is one of Tapio Wirkkala’s most famous creations and has enjoyed great popularity for decades. Each piece of the Ultima Thule collection is handcrafted at the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland.
