Mifune Festival
The Mifune Festival is the annual ritual of Kurumazaki Shrine.
Held in May, when the fresh green of early summer surrounds the scenic Ōi River in Arashiyama, the festival features an elegant reenactment of Heian-period imperial boating ceremonies.
Kurumazaki Shrine is located a little over one kilometer east of Arashiyama’s Togetsu Bridge.
The enshrined deity is Kiyohara no Yoriyasu, who served Emperor Takakura.
The origin of the Mifune Festival dates back to Shōtai 1 (898), when Emperor Uda enjoyed a boating excursion in the Arashiyama area.
The name “Mifune” (“three boats”) comes from a later imperial outing by Emperor Shirakawa on the Ōi River, during which three different boats were set afloat—one for Chinese poetry, one for Japanese poetry, and one for musical performance.
