Item Description
This square plate is a distinguished work by Kato Hajime (1900-1968), one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic masters who was designated as a Living National Treasure for his mastery of polychrome porcelain (iro-e jiki) in 1961. The piece features the traditional Oribe style with its characteristic green glaze and delicate plum blossom (ume) motif rendered with refined artistry.
Kato's interpretation of the historical Oribe aesthetic demonstrates his deep understanding of both classical techniques and modern sensibilities. The square form of the plate showcases the artist's command of geometric composition, while the plum blossom design reflects his skill in combining traditional Japanese motifs with the bold, dynamic spirit of Oribe ware.
The piece comes in an identification box inscribed by Kato Tatsumi, the artist's eldest son, who was himself a distinguished ceramic artist and professor at Musashino Art University. This authentication by a family member adds significant provenance and value to the work.
Oribe ware, originally created during the Momoyama period under the guidance of tea master Furuta Oribe, is known for its innovative approach to form and decoration. Kato Hajime's work in this tradition represents a masterful 20th-century interpretation of these historical techniques.

Artist Profile
Kato Hajime (1900-1968) was born in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Japan's renowned ceramics center. After studying design, he worked at the Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Research Institute before establishing his own kiln in Hiyoshi, Yokohama in 1940. In 1955, he became the first professor of ceramics at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he mentored numerous notable artists.
Kato achieved international recognition when his work won the Grand Prix at the 1937 Paris International Exposition. His greatest accomplishment was the successful recreation of extremely difficult Chinese polychrome porcelain techniques, particularly "oji-kosai" (yellow ground with red overglaze) and "moegi-kinrande" (celadon with gold brocade design). He was designated as a Living National Treasure in 1961 for his mastery of polychrome porcelain.
Throughout his career, Kato combined scholarly research of historical ceramics with innovative artistic expression, creating works that honored tradition while embodying modern aesthetic values. He passed away in 1968 while completing a monumental piece for the new Imperial Palace.
