Item Description
This exceptional bowl (hachi) is a masterpiece created by Ishida Toshun (1944-2012), a distinguished female potter of the renowned Tamba-yaki tradition. Tamba-yaki, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkoyō), has a storied history spanning over 850 years in Hyogo Prefecture's Sasayama region.
This piece showcases the characteristic earthy beauty of Tamba-yaki with its natural clay body and the organic interplay of form and glaze. The bowl's generous proportions and gentle, rounded form make it an ideal serving vessel for a wide range of culinary presentations—from fresh salads and simmered dishes to rice bowls and seasonal delicacies. The substantial weight and presence of the piece speak to the authentic traditional craftsmanship and high-fired stoneware body typical of Tamba pottery.
Ishida Toshun was renowned for her masterful use of the yakishime (unglazed firing) technique, where the natural ash deposits from wood-firing create unique, unrepeatable surface effects. This bowl embodies her artistic vision of harmonizing traditional Tamba techniques with functional elegance. Each piece bears the individual character imparted by the kiln's flames, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
The bowl's rustic charm and timeless aesthetic make it a versatile addition to both traditional Japanese table settings and contemporary dining spaces. It represents not only a functional vessel but also a piece of ceramic art history from one of Tamba-yaki's most respected contemporary artists.

Artist Profile
Ishida Toshun (1944-2012) was a celebrated female potter who dedicated her life to the Tamba-yaki tradition. Born in 1944 in Hyogo Prefecture, she studied under master potter Morimoto Tokoku from 1968 and established her own climbing kiln (noborigama) in Aino in 1971.
Throughout her career, Ishida became known for her exceptional command of traditional wood-firing techniques, particularly yakishime (unglazed stoneware), where natural ash deposits from the kiln create stunning, unpredictable surface effects. Her works are characterized by their robust forms, earthy glazes, and the distinctive markings left by the intense heat of the wood-fired kiln.
Ishida's pieces are held in high regard by collectors and museums, including works in the permanent collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. Her contribution to preserving and advancing the Tamba-yaki tradition has cemented her legacy as one of the most important female potters in contemporary Japanese ceramics.
