Original Second World War Italian colonial police badge of the Polizia dell’Africa Italiana (PAI), the elite police force operating in Italian East Africa between 1937 and 1943.
The badge is of bronze construction with original gilt finish, featuring a finely detailed eagle surmounted by the crown and bearing the enamelled Savoyard shield to the chest. The enamel is original, correctly recessed, and displays appropriate age-related wear consistent with period manufacture.
The reverse retains its original screw-post fittings with matching period nuts, a key authenticity feature often missing from later copies. The posts are correctly positioned and show no evidence of later alteration or replacement.
Detail throughout is crisp and sharply struck, particularly to the feathers, head, claws, and rope motif. The badge shows honest wear and natural patina, with no signs of casting flaws, modern tooling, or artificial ageing.
This is a genuine period PAI badge, not a modern reproduction. Such badges are increasingly sought after due to the short operational history of the Polizia dell’Africa Italiana and the relative scarcity of surviving original insignia.
