Ko-omote symbolises a young maiden of around 16 to 17 years old, and is admired for its calm, refined beauty and its subtle, ambiguous expression. What makes this mask especially captivating is the way its mood seems to change depending on how it is viewed. A gentle tilt can shift the expression from quietly smiling to slightly melancholic, allowing the performer to create a wide range of emotion with minimal movement on stage. The ohaguro (blackened teeth) is an important detail, traditionally associated with adulthood and maturity in historical Japan, adding depth and authenticity to the character portrayed. The mask is signed by the maker Komatsu Hosai (小松芳斉) and comes with its original wooden storage box bearing the artist’s inscription. A silk mask bag is also included, and the mask retains its original cords. Inside the mask, the maker’s mark is present, offering another confirming detail for collectors. Fair to good used condition. This is a vintage item and shows visible signs of age and use, which add to its authentic character. There are noticeable abrasions and scuffs on the chin and cheek areas. Minor lacquer chipping and wear are present around the cord holes and along the edges of the hairline. The red pigment on the lips shows fine craquelure. Some light smudging and patina consistent with age throughout the surface. The lid of the paulownia wood box is slightly warped.
