Item Description
This exceptional Oribe glazed jar is a masterwork by Ryoichi Hashiba (1934-), founder of the renowned Tohara Kiln.
The piece exemplifies the artist's mastery of traditional Oribe techniques combined with sophisticated sculptural sensibility.
The vessel's most striking feature is its remarkable surface treatment—the entire body is adorned with meticulously hand-carved raised protrusions that create a dynamic, three-dimensional texture.
These carefully arranged geometric elements form a mesmerizing pattern across the spherical form, demonstrating extraordinary technical skill and artistic vision.
Each element has been individually shaped and applied, creating a tactile landscape that invites both visual and physical appreciation.
The classic Oribe glaze flows beautifully over this sculptural surface, displaying the characteristic deep olive-green tones with subtle variations ranging from rich forest green to lighter celadon hues.
The glaze pools and breaks naturally over the raised elements, creating depth and complexity that showcase the artist's deep understanding of glaze chemistry and firing techniques.
The contrast between the glazed upper portion and the exposed clay body at the base demonstrates traditional aesthetic principles.
The form itself is elegantly proportioned—a full-bodied spherical shape that transitions gracefully to a refined cylindrical neck.
This classical jar form (tsubo) has been transformed through Hashiba's distinctive surface treatment into a contemporary sculptural object while maintaining reverence for historical Oribe traditions.
The piece comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) inscribed "Oribe, Jar, Made by Ryoichi," which authenticates the work and adds significant collector value. This represents the sophisticated work produced at Tohara Kiln during its distinguished 52-year history (1956-2008).
This work embodies the stoic refinement and technical excellence for which Hashiba was renowned. Despite its relatively compact scale, the piece commands presence through its intricate surface work and masterful glazing—a testament to an artist who elevated functional forms to fine art while honoring centuries-old ceramic traditions.

Artist Profile
Ryoichi Hashiba (1934-) was one of the most accomplished ceramic artists of modern Mino ware tradition. Born in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture—the historic heartland of Japanese ceramics—Hashiba trained under the distinguished ceramic designer Sakuzo Hineno, learning the foundations of form and aesthetics that would shape his career.
After apprenticing in Tokoname and various locations in Kyoto to refine his technical skills across different ceramic traditions, Hashiba established Tohara Kiln in Dachi-cho, Toki City in 1956 at the age of 22. For over five decades, the kiln became renowned for producing exceptional works that bridged daily-use pottery and fine art ceramics.
Hashiba mastered the full spectrum of traditional Mino glazing techniques, including Shinsha (copper-red), Kairagi (crawling glaze), Ki-Seto (yellow Seto), Oribe (green glaze), Shino (white feldspathic glaze), and Kushime (comb-pattern). This comprehensive command of historical techniques allowed him to create works ranging from refined tea ceremony utensils to monumental jars, each demonstrating first-class craftsmanship.
His Oribe works are particularly celebrated for their sophisticated interpretation of this Momoyama-period tradition. While honoring the aesthetic principles established by tea master Furuta Oribe in the late 16th century, Hashiba brought contemporary sculptural sensibility to the tradition, creating pieces that were both historically grounded and artistically innovative.
Throughout his career, Hashiba held numerous solo exhibitions and received various prestigious awards in recognition of his artistic achievements. His works were sought by collectors and tea ceremony practitioners alike for their technical excellence and aesthetic refinement.
In 2008, at the age of 74, Hashiba reluctantly closed Tohara Kiln due to his advancing age, marking the end of an era in modern Mino ceramics. His legacy continues through the exceptional works he created during his 52-year career, pieces that represent the highest level of contemporary Japanese ceramic art while maintaining deep respect for traditional techniques and aesthetics.
