神社 - 榉树 Keyaki (日本榉树) - 1850-1900 - Danjiri Kibanashishi 木鼻獅子
A finely carved wooden kibana 木鼻 in the form of a shishi 獅子 (lion), originating from a danjiri 地車 festival float of the Senshū 泉州 region, Osaka, Japan.
Although this piece was originally made for use on a danjiri festival float and not for permanent installation in a shrine, the form, carving techniques, and symbolic role are closely shared with shrine and temple architectural carvings, and works of this type have historically been used in both festival and shrine contexts.
The shishi is rendered with a powerful and animated expression: wide, alert eyes set beneath deeply carved brows, a vigorously open mouth, and dynamic spiral manes that convey movement and vitality despite the compact scale.
This carving represents the syllable “A” (阿), symbolizing the beginning of all things in Buddhist cosmology. Shishi figures serve as protective and auspicious guardians, believed to ward off evil and bring prosperity. In the Senshū area of Osaka—renowned for its highly expressive carving traditions—such works reflect communal identity and the advanced skill of regional craftsmen.
The piece is carved from solid keyaki 欅 (Japanese zelkova), a hardwood prized for its strength, durability, and beautiful grain. It is entirely hand-carved using traditional chisels (nomi), with confident tool marks clearly visible, particularly in the swirling mane and stylized paws.
The eyes are finished with gold powder, giving the shishi a vivid and commanding gaze. The interior of the open mouth is finished in red lacquer, creating a striking contrast with the naturally aged surface of the keyaki wood.
Originally mounted at the front or corner of a danjiri float, kibana such as this were designed to be viewed from below and at close range, emphasizing bold forms, deep carving, and expressive detail—qualities equally valued in shrine and temple architecture.
