This exquisite print is by Ikegami Soho (池上壮豊), a leading artist in contemporary Japanese creative printmaking, created circa 1980–1990s. Titled Shōin - San (松韻 - 参), it is one of his iconic limited-edition pine forest series, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with the artistic expressiveness of modern printmaking. It belongs to his signature "Natural Imagery Series," which uses plants as a medium to interpret "the tension of life and the modern expression of traditional aesthetics"—a quintessential work from the artist’s mature creative period.
The composition is dominated by blue-green tones, transitioning from a pale, misty celadon background to the deep blue and navy pine grove as the focal point. Color gradients create a profound sense of spatial depth, with pine branches layered in light and dark hues and textured with stippling that mimics the soft fullness of pine needles and the play of dappled light. Hazy moonlight shimmers on the water in the background, casting sparkling, rippling reflections—their shimmering, wave-like texture endows the static pine grove with a vivid sense of rhythm. These lunar water reflections blend with the interplay of solid and ethereal pine boughs, weaving a serene, airy and elegant Japanese wabi-sabi atmosphere, where concrete details are understated to accentuate the profound beauty of the artistic conception.
In traditional Japanese culture, the pine (松) symbolizes longevity, resilience, and purity, and is a classic motif representing "evergreen vitality" in Japanese aesthetics. The artist reinterprets the traditional pine landscape through modern printmaking language, preserving the Zen spirit of Japanese landscape while imbuing it with modern artistic tension.
The work bears the pencil-written title and edition number 49/73 (limited to 73 pieces) in the lower-left corner, and the artist’s pencil signature and red seal in the lower-right corner.
This print comes with a mat board. Due to age, the paper exhibits minor age-related signs such as slight discoloration and gentle creasing, yet it remains in overall excellent good condition.
