- Created by William Marriner & Otis Wood in 1905, Sambo is a gag strip whose central themes were mostly racially insensitive stereotypes. The main character was Sambo, a neighborhood pre-adolescent who had a habit of getting into comic trouble. The distasteful portrayals of Sambo's attitude and speech were intended to add humor. More then 100 years after their printing, those portrayals are shockingly insensitive. Each page of Sambo is a view into an era of racial ignorance which should never happen again. The market for Sambo is quite hot, more than likely attributable to the historic significance of the strip. Offered exclusively as a sunday, collectors pay high premium for color versions when available.
On the back of the pages: Bub - He's always to blame, The Unusual Child, Wags - The dog that adopted a man, Simon Simple, J. Jasper Jinks Jr., Hairbreadth Harry, etc...
The pages are in good condition, although wrinkles, tears, flaking and missing pieces may occur. (see photos)
