The stamp you see in the pictures is a
1933 Italian Airmail "Croceira Nord Atlantica" issue, commemorating
General Italo Balbo's transatlantic flight with a squadron of seaplanes from Rome to Chicago for the "Century of Progress" exhibition. This specific format is a horizontal triptych (a strip of three connected stamps).
The central stamp has a face value of L. 5,25 (5.25
Lire), which covered the rate for a registered letter sent by express mail ("Raccomandata per Espresso"). The right stamp is for the supplementary airmail fee.
The left panel features the Italian flag and text indicating the aircraft's identification,
"APPARECCHIO I-ROVI". "I-ROVI" was the registration number for one of the seaplanes (specifically a Savoia-Marchetti S.55X) in the squadron.
The center panel displays a portrait of King Victor Emmanuel III.
The right panel shows a depiction of the seaplane squadron in flight with the text "CROCIERA NORD ATLANTICA".
These stamps are philatelic collectibles tied to a significant moment in aviation history, the first mass formation flight across the North Atlantic. The set was issued in two versions: one for the European air rate (L. 5.25 + L.
19.75) and one for the North American rate (L. 5.25 + L. 44.75), which typically shows the Coliseum and Chicago skyscrapers. The stamp in the pictures is the North American rate one.
The stamp is in excellent condition, see pictures for your own impression, with an almost imperceptible sign of a previous hinge.
Sassone catalog (2026) evaluate the stamp €220.
Worldwide tracked shipping € 10
United Kingdom €5.
