Todai-ji Rōben Inkstone by Kiyomizu Kōshō - 墨水池 - 石器
This is a refined Japanese ceramic inkstone (tōken) known as a “Rōben inkstone”, associated with Tōdai-ji Temple and created under the supervision or design of Kiyomizu Kōshō (1911–1999), the former chief priest of Tōdai-ji and a highly respected Buddhist calligrapher and cultural figure.
The inkstone is formed in the shape of the character “風” (wind), symbolizing natural flow, impermanence, and spiritual movement—concepts deeply connected to Buddhist philosophy. Such themed inkstones were often produced for commemorative or cultural purposes related to major temples.
Made of ceramic, the piece combines both practical function and sculptural presence, suitable for calligraphy practice, tea-room display, or scholarly appreciation. It comes complete with its original tomobako (signed wooden storage box), enhancing its authenticity and collectability.
Objects connected to major temples such as Tōdai-ji and to figures like Kiyomizu Kōshō are especially valued for their religious, cultural, and artistic significance. This inkstone represents an appealing example of modern Japanese religious craft.
