A rare Viking Age amuletic plaque, dating to circa 8th–10th century AD, attributed to Early Medieval Northern Europe, possibly Scandinavian or Baltic cultural sphere.
This intriguing piece is crafted from thin silver or silver-alloy sheet, shaped into a rounded, shield-like form. The surface is decorated using hammered repoussé and punched-dot ornamentation, a technique well attested in Viking Age metalwork.
At the upper section are two carefully pierced circular openings, giving the object a distinctly face-like or “watchful” appearance. In Norse belief systems, such abstract representations are often associated with protection, awareness, and warding against hostile forces, rather than literal depiction.
The dotted surface may symbolise:
Protective boundaries
Cosmic or stellar references
Reinforcement of apotropaic power
Such plaques were likely sewn onto garments, attached to belts, pouches, or ritual textiles, and may have been worn by adults or children as personal protective charms.
The piece shows authentic wear, oxidation, and patina consistent with age, supporting its long period of use.
A compelling example of Viking Age symbolic expression, reflecting the Norse preference for abstract, powerful forms over figurative imagery.
