Group of Egyptian Faience Amulets Related to Fertility
and Protection
Culture: Ancient Egypt
Period: Late Period, 664–332 BC
Material: Faience
Description
Small group of two Egyptian faience amulets associated with fertility, maternity, and protective magic.
The first amulet represents Taweret, the hippopotamus goddess protector of women, pregnancy, and childbirth. The figure is shown standing upright, pierced for suspension, with worn but legible anatomical features. Despite its modest size, the amulet is well-formed and clearly identifiable.
The second amulet is a poppy (opium poppy capsule), a symbolic form connected with fertility, regeneration, sleep, and rebirth. Poppy amulets are characteristic of Late Period personal devotion and are typically found in female or domestic contexts.
The combination of Taweret and the poppy creates a coherent symbolic group, strongly linked to protection of motherhood, fertility, and the cycle of life.
Dimensions
Taweret amulet: 22 mm height
Poppy amulet: 10 mm height
Condition
Both amulets are intact, with surface wear, small chips, and encrustations consistent with age and burial conditions. No restorations observed.
Provenance
Private collection, Europe.
Previously acquired on the European art market.
