Artist Profile
Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919-2007) was born in Tokyo as the eldest son of a traditional braided cord maker. He graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology's Ceramics Department in 1941 and became an apprentice to Shoji Hamada in 1946, one of the founding figures of the Japanese Mingei (Folk Craft) movement.
In 1953, Shimaoka established his own kiln in Mashiko, where he developed his distinctive style combining ancient Jomon pottery techniques with contemporary ceramic art. His signature "Jomon-zogan" (rope-pattern inlay) technique revived prehistoric Japanese pottery methods, creating deeply textured surfaces through rope impressions filled with colored slip.
Throughout his career, Shimaoka exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally. He taught at various institutions, significantly influencing studio pottery worldwide. In 1996, he was designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder) for Mingei Pottery.
Shimaoka received numerous prestigious awards including the Japan Ceramic Society Gold Prize (1994) and the Order of the Rising Sun (1999). His works are held in major collections worldwide and in prominent museums. He continued working until his passing in 2007 at age 88, leaving behind a legacy as one of Japan's most influential ceramic artists.
