Thus, Imperial goes down in history and becomes the first Spanish wine to receive this recognition from the magazine, which each year decides which wines are trending worldwide. Each year Wine Spectator tastes and mentions thousands of wines from which for 25 years it has extracted its Top 100 Wines, with the hundred best wines of the year from all over the world to the United States. In 2013, the Top 100 Wines is made up of wines from 13 countries, the 100 best wines of the year, and Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 has stood out among them all to take first place. The magazine makes this selection based on the quality, price, availability and accessibility of the wine, and what Wine Spectator calls the 'x factor', which is the emotion that the wine produces in the person tasting it, and Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 brings it all together. An elegant wine with personality This is a powerful wine with an elegant and distinctive aroma, sprinkled with fruity notes combined with spicy nuances, all contributed by its ageing in high-quality barrels. Its colour is a bright burgundy red, but its true strength lies in its flavour, which continues to grow as it comes into contact with the palate. Characteristics typical of Rioja Alta. Imperial is the flagship of the CVNE winery and was born in the 1920s, becoming one of the great fine red wines of Spain. Its name comes from the special bottlings for the English market, called “Pinta Imperial” (an English pint, or imperial, approximately half a litre). The Imperial range of wines only includes Reserva and Gran Reserva and they are only produced when exceptional harvests are produced in Rioja Alta.
