A modern OWL SCULPTURE designed by Yan Zoritchak and made by Val Saint Lambert in Belgium. The sculpture is shaped like a vertical triangular prism. A single circular cavity (concave) is ground into the back. Due to light refraction through the side facets, this single cavity appears as TWO EYES when viewed from the front creating a fascinating OPTICAL ILLUSION. The top or front of the owl is partially frosted to suggest feathers or a face, while the rest of the crystal remains clear and polished. Yan Zoritchak is a glass artist born in Zdiar, Slovakia in 1944. He studied at the High School for Applied Arts in Zelezny Brod (1959-1963) and the University of Prague (1963-1969). During the 1970's and 1980's he designed crystal objects for Val Saint Lambert. These included this figure, where he successfully transforms the prism obelisk into an owl by utilizing his knowledge of glass properties. This work is considered a masterful example of how geometric shapes and the physical properties of glass can be used to create figurative art. The Owl Sculpture is illustrated on page 337 of the book "Le Val-Saint-Lambert" by Joseph Philippe, accompanied by the following information: "THE EAGLE-OWL, in clear crystal cut by Hubert Léga.
