Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Early Medieval bone cross pendant with rosette decorations. Carved from bone and formed as a compact cross with three carved circular rosette or sunburst motifs. The rosettes consist of a central boss surrounded by radiating grooves.
Additional small leaf- or petal-shaped incisions fill the spaces. The suspension hole is drilled horizontally through the upper arm, allowing the cross to be worn flat against the body.
-> In early Medieval Christianity, three is the most symbolically charged number, referred to as the 'Holy Trinity' (Father, Son and Holy Spirit).
The pendant will be delivered on a modern leather jewellery cord, allowing for modern wear or display.
Size: ± 43,1 x 26,9 mm
Condition: good solid condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Bone crosses of this type are associated with everyday Christian devotion, worn as protective pendants rather than as purely ornamental jewellery. The style and material point to an early medieval Christian context, with parallels in both Western and Eastern Christian regions.
-> The rosette and sunburst motifs commonly symbolise: divine light, Christ as 'Lux Mundi' (Light of the World), resurrection and eternal life. When repeated three times, the meaning can be read as 'Divine light emanating from the Trinity'.
