Item Description This lot consists of two creative kokeshi dolls produced by Usaburo Kokeshi Studio. Left doll: The title of this work is unknown. It features a red and white plum blossom (kōhaku bai) design painted on a softly rounded body. The gentle smiling expression gives the piece a calm and comforting presence. The same body shape was used for multiple floral variations by the studio. The artist’s burned mark is present on the lower part, and an original maker’s sticker is affixed to the base. Right doll: The title of this work is “恋心”. Romanized title: Koigokoro The title can be translated as “Feelings of Love”. This doll is characterized by a slightly reserved, strong-willed expression. Among the “Koigokoro” series, versions with a red hair ornament are considered uncommon. The surface is hand-painted with floral motifs over a dark-toned garment. The artist’s mark is present on the base. Both dolls are hand-carved from wood and finished with hand-painted decoration. Minor surface wear, small marks, and natural variations in the wood are visible, consistent with age and handmade wooden objects. Artist Usaburo Okamoto was a Japanese kokeshi artist and the founder of Usaburo Kokeshi Studio. He received the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award and is also known for producing works purchased by Emperor Showa. His studio played an important role in the development of creative kokeshi during the Showa period.
